Winter Shade

12” x 12” - Oil on stretched canvas

A lovely tree portrait focusing on the luminous glow of the forest beyond a Cedar, while taking refuge from the chilly rain.

I wanted to show a perspective differing from my usual nature scenes while experimenting with the innate mat and gloss of the paint. Using palette knives to apply think paint (impasto) for the tree trunk, I was able to create a texture affect lending to the sturdiness of the trunk verses the more delicateness of its branches. This has also allowed a certain luminance in the background, further creating the feeling that the viewer is standing in the shadow under the tree.
